Almost twenty years ago, I set sail on my newly renovated sailboat, Fera, embarking on a journey that remains etched in my heart. Our adventure began in one of my favorite spots in Croatia – the breathtaking Istrian coast and the enchanting Brijuni Islands.

Discovering Istria’s Timeless Charm

Istria is a treasure trove of history, culture, and natural beauty. Its west coast is dotted with picturesque towns like Poreč, Rovinj, and Pula, each offering a unique charm. Beyond the mainland, the Brijuni National Park beckons with its serene islands and pristine waters.

The Istrian peninsula has a fascinating history that dates back thousands of years. A highlight is Monkodonja, a Bronze Age fortress discovered in 1953. Perched on a hill near Rovinj, its ancient walls and foundations evoke the grandeur of Mycenaean Greece.

Istria Through the Ages

From Roman emperors to Napoleonic battles, Istria’s history is as colorful as its sunsets. Over the centuries, it has been ruled by the Romans, Goths, Byzantines, and Habsburgs, leaving behind a tapestry of cultures. Even the town names reflect this heritage, with many places still known by their Italian names. Today, Istria’s charming towns, bustling marinas, and warm hospitality make it a sailor’s dream destination.

It probably doesn't make much sense to describe the cities of Poreč, Rovinj and Pula. All of them are worth a visit, and in each city, you will find a well-protected port or marina. We'd better move straight to Brijuni National Park.

Brijuni National Park

The Brijuni National Park, a mesmerizing archipelago of 14 islands, is a paradise for nature lovers and sailors. The crown jewel is Veliki Brijun, the largest island and the only one accessible by private yacht. Beyond its lush landscapes, the island holds stories of wartime resilience and grandeur.

Tito’s Island Getaway

During the 20th century, the Brijuni Islands became a playground for the powerful. From 1947, Josip Broz Tito, the president of Yugoslavia, made the islands his private retreat. He hosted luminaries like Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, and Fidel Castro. Today, remnants of this era, combined with the islands’ natural beauty, make Brijuni a truly unique destination.

Wildlife and Wonder: Flora & Fauna on Brijuni

Brijuni’s ecosystem is a botanical wonderland. Over 680 plant species, from Mediterranean oaks to exotic palms and cacti, thrive here. One of the highlights is an ancient olive tree that has stood for an incredible 1,600 years! For animal lovers, the safari park is a delight, home to zebras, elephants, antelopes, and more.

In the northern area of Veliki Brijun, a safari park was set up in 1978 on a fenced area of 9 hectares. You can see elephants, llamas, zebras, antelopes, Somali sheep, Indian sacred cows, and typical donkeys. The Brijuni Islands are extraordinary and worth a visit.
