A quick (although inefficient) handover process.
The yacht Ekaterina is only 8 years old, yet in a dire state: - the diesel tank is leaking into the yacht (check tank connections right below the port aft bunk), what causes an unbearable smell, which won't let you sleep, even with doors and hatches open. It gets even worse if you switch on AC (spreading to starboard cabin too), so keep it off. We've been extracting all the leaked diesel from below the tank on a daily basis in attempts to reduce the smell, yet the crew had to sleep in a galley instead anyway: the plywood of the yacht itself is so soaked with the diesel, so cleaning the plastic of the hull doesn't help enough. - the forepeak port side cabin is leaking from the roof big time: if you happen to sail close hauled (with an occasional wave splashing over the bow), expect everything inside to be wet: it leaks through the lockers down onto mattresses below. - the same forepeak port cabin has no light whatsoever: we can only suspect that this very leaking water had eaten away all the wires already, yet when the shore team (Thomas) were made aware of this, they did not manage to make it work until our departure next morning. It turned out on return that the charter company is well aware of these problems, yet neither they told us about them in advance, nor they've seen these as a problem / anything to worry about. - there were more minor issues, like not working VHF (no power = find a switch below seats) and an AC (not cooling = air in the water supply system = unplug intake hose from the pump and let it flow full of water, then reassemble), but we've fixed them en route, with the help of their shore based team (George?) on the phone. Finally, for the return the company (Greco Sail) asked us to return the yacht to marina Kalithea. Not a big deal (it's not too far from Alimos), yet: - it does not have a water supply where we were asked to moor (not a big deal given that there must be showers ashore, but... read on). - nor does it have any facilities (toilets/showers) after 5pm (they get closed then until morning). - the company representative who came to accept the yacht (Thomas) didn't even know the state and whereabouts of the facilities: he had to call someone to figure out where they are, and whether those will be open, and didn't give a conclusive answer even then. - and when one of our female crew members started to wonder what can he offer for the whole crew to get a shower (there were 9 of us, all willing for a shower after a long day, obviously), he first said that "she must've just had a beer, ignore her", and when [being shocked] she asked to clarify what he just said, he explained to her "how quickly she will fly off his yacht now". I (the skipper) had to intervene hard, and Thomas wisely left the yacht in frustration. Yet the sour taste remained. All in all, the company neither seems to care of the yachts they have, nor about their own clients, verbally abusing them. Very unhappy overall. Won't ever deal with them again.
